What is a Water Main?
By ProMatcher Staff
Water Main Definition. A water main is a pipe or conduit through which fresh water runs from a water source or purification facility to homes and businesses.
Synonyms. A water main is also known as: water main line, main water line, main water pipe, or main water supply line.
Public Water Main. A public water main is installed and maintained by your local water authority. They typically run underneath public streets and adjacent to private properties. A private property owner can then request to “tap” into the water main to get access to water. If there is a problem with the public water main, the local water authority is responsible for repairs or replacement.
Private Water Main. A private water main runs from the street to the building they are servicing (like a house or commercial building). These lines run over private property and are therefore the responsibility of the property owner. If there is a problem (such as a leak), then the repair is the responsibility of the property owner.
