Types of Appliance Water Lines

There are several options to choose from when selecting an appliance water supply line. There are three main types: plastic, metal, and flexible lines.
Plastic (or PVC) Lines
Plastic (or PVC) lines are the cheapest option but have a shorter life span than metal. They are widely used but the potential for leaks are higher than metal. Leaks can lead to extensive water damage from flooding. Labor costs for installing plastic water lines are less because they can be glued or clamped.

Plus Factor - $ - Lower installation cost (no soldering required)
Plus Factor - Flexible material
Minus Factor - Less durable than metal and easier to puncture (however, they are better in this regard than flexible lines)
Brass or Copper Lines
Brass or copper options are more durable than plastic lines, but they are slightly more expensive. They require special installation because they may require soldering.

Minus Factor - Less flexible material
Minus Factor - $$ - Higher installation cost
Minus Factor - $$ - Higher material cost
Flexible Lines
Flexible lines (or "flex lines") are made of reinforced, braided stainless steel are the most expensive option; however, they are durable, easy to install, and highly recommended by professionals.
Plus Factor - Most durable material (difficult to puncture)
Plus Factor - More flexible material
Plus Factor - $ - Lower installation cost
Minus Factor - $$$ - Highest material cost
