Cost of Water Main Installation or Repair
By ProMatcher Staff
This article is intended for residential water line installation and repair.
The cost of water main installation or repair (see the chart to the right) will increase or decrease based upon a number of factors. We have prepared a list of items that impact the cost of a water line installation or repair:
Repair vs. installation cost of a residential water main. It is a little less expensive to repair a water main than it is to repair one. However, you may want to go ahead and spend the extra money to replace the entire water main line rather than repair it. This is especially true for lead and galvanized steel water main piping. In fact, some jurisdictions will not allow lead or galvanized steel pipes to be repaired.
The number of linear feet from the building to the street. In general, the further it is from the street to where the main line enters the building, the higher the installation cost. That said, most contractors charge a minimum cost for every project regardless of the length of pipe they lay. Thus, there may not be much of a cost difference between a 30 foot project and a 40 foot project.
Sidewalks, walkways, and driveways. Having to burrow pipe underneath a hard surface will increase the cost.
Type of water main material you use will impact cost. The two most common pipe materials used for residential water mains are copper and PVC. Your contractor will recommend a material, often based on where you are located. In general, the installation of copper will be more expensive than PVC.
Are permits required for the water line Permits may be required to replace a water line in your jurisdiction. If a permit is required, it will increase the installation cost. The cost will vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction.
